Week one parliament preview, May 2019

6 May 2019

The Gunner Labor Government’s track record of poor financial and economic management leaves little hope for a successful budget that will guarantee prosperity for the Territory.

Leader of the Opposition Gary Higgins said the recent John Langoulant Report was a small taste of Labor’s inability to manage a budget, and was an insight into their failure to make any of the tough decisions needed.

Tomorrow, the Government will put forward their budget before the Opposition has their reply on Wednesday.

"This Gunner Labor Government has shown over and over again that they are incapable of fiscal discipline, managing the Territory’s budget, and providing the certainty and measures to re-inflate the economy through private sector investment," Mr Higgins said.

"They’ve put all the hard decisions off to the next election and the ones beyond, so we don’t expect to see any of the tough decisions they absolutely need to make.

"The Northern Territory is the worst economy in Australia, we are at the bottom, and we will continue to stay at the bottom unless the Gunner Labor Government does the hard work that’s necessary.

"The Opposition will certainly be taking the Gunner Labor Government to task over its failures in managing the economy and lack of budget discipline."
