The Northern Territory’s deep recession continues, with state final demand down 2.5 per cent according to GDP figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The NT’s decrease in this quarter follows an 8.4 per cent decrease in the September quarter, and is the worst of all of Australia’s states and Territories, with Western Australia the next worse at a decline of .03 per cent.
Leader of the Opposition Gary Higgins said the NT was the worst in the nation by a long way due to poor economic management, and people were tightening their belts as a response to the economic conditions.
"This is another blow to Territorians who are doing it tough," he said.
"This confirms that the economic crisis is real, and real action is required now. We need actions, and not words. The government must show leadership otherwise things will only get worse. This is further evidence of why Territorians no longer have confidence in this Labor Government.
"How many more reports do the government need to finally get the picture?"
