Territory in a sad state

28 OCTOBER 2019

The Gunner Labor Government have no plan for the economy, as the Territory again is ranked last in CommSec’s State of the States Report.
Opposition Leader Gary Higgins said the Gunner Labor Government was running out of time to fix the disastrous situation.
“The NT is the only jurisdiction where retail spending growth is negative, with it being 1.9 per cent below the decade average,” he said.
“Employment in the Northern Territory is falling at a 3 per cent annual rate and unemployment is 40.2 per cent higher than decade average.
“In addition to all that, construction work done in the June quarter was 67.6 per cent below the decade-average and annual population growth rates in the Northern Territory are down 140.9 per cent.”
Mr Higgins said the Chief Minister needed to take some serious action beyond the short term spending they’re doing.
“Underground car parks are expensive and only a short-term injection into the economy,” he said.
“What the Territory needs is long term sustainable projects and jobs.
“A CLP Government would rein in the spending, free up industry and business, support a diversified economy, support sustainable infrastructure, incentivise private sector investment and stop the waste.
“We can’t afford the Gunner Labor Government anymore.”
