The Labor Government is yet again demonstrating its arrogance over the development of their new youth justice and alcohol rehabilitation facility at Pinelands.
Deputy Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro and Independent Member for Nelson Gerry Wood said today’s announcement by the Territory Families Minister of the design tender award shows the government is going to charge ahead with developing the facility regardless of the community’s concerns about the possible sites.
"The Minister fails to listen to local businesses and residents who say they don’t want the facility at Pinelands," Mrs Finocchiaro said. "They have ploughed ahead announcing the design tender when public submissions on the suitability of the site have not even closed."
Mr Wood said the Government has also continued to demonstrate its lack of courtesy with the announcement of a youth training facility in Howard Springs without any consultation with neighbouring residents.
He said it seems the word ‘consultation’ is a concept that Labor know nothing about because if they had consulted with the community they may not have been in the pickle they find themselves in with the Pinelands fiasco.
Mr Wood said as for the siting of a facility for kids at risk in Howard Springs (not Palmerston) without one word of consultation with the community and the local member, if that is Labor‘s idea of good manners, courtesy and consultation then they might have just given everyone the finger – it might have been more honest.
Both members said it’s time Labor woke up to itself.
"When is this Government going to realise that it cannot go around making rash decisions that affect the lives of Territorians without consulting with them first," they said.
