Long-term Katherine resident Jo Hersey has been announced as the Country Liberal candidate for the seat of Katherine.
CLP party president Ron Kelly said there were many people who put their hand up for the job, but with decades of experience running a small business in Katherine, Mrs Hersey was exactly what the CLP were looking for.
"Katherine has been completely left behind by this Gunner Labor Government and a local member whose priority is clearly not Katherine," he said.
"We were looking for someone who was not only passionate about the Territory, but also active in their town and electorate, and Mrs Hersey was that person.
"She has experience as a business owner, a community member, and has raised a family there."
Mrs Hersey said she was ecstatic to be selected, and was excited for the challenge of winning the seat and representing the people of Katherine.
"I love Katherine and the people in it, so to be selected as a candidate for this seat is humbling," she said.
"We have seen little development from this Gunner Labor Government in Katherine, house prices drop, and work dry up for a lot of businesses.
"Crime is a big issue, and we see almost weekly businesses broken into and our main street vandalised.
"There is a lot of work to do, and I believe I am the right person to do it."
Mr Kelly said the next round of candidates will be announced early next year.
"We are very excited by the calibre of people putting their hand up for pre selection, and we know from when we called for applications that these people are quality Territorians ready to work and dedicate themselves to their electorates and the Northern Territory," he said.
