Building our team for 2020

22 September 2019

A statement from Opposition Leader Gary Higgins

"The CLP will offer Territorians a real alternative next year, and the Parliamentary team is excited about the announcement of the candidate to run for the seat of Katherine.

"We are building a strong team for 2020. The candidate announced today offers experience in business and community engagement, but most importantly, is a person committed to the Northern Territory.

"We know there is a lot more hard work to be done, but I am confident our new team will be more than up to the task.

"Katherine and the Northern Territory has suffered untold damage at the hands of the Gunner Labor Government. Our economy is stagnant and crime is out of control. Jobs are drying up and our population is shrinking.

"We need a government that leads by example and looks after the Territory’s interest, not their own. What we’ve seen over the last three years is Labor continually scrambling to look after the interests of a few at the expense of many.

"And when they’re not doing that, they are failing at the basics – they don’t know how to govern, they don’t know how to do the work.

"Time and again we have called on Labor to implement some practical measures to address some of our major issues. The Gunner Labor Government needs to rein in the spending, stop the waste, diversify the economy, free up business, encourage private sector investment, remove unnecessary regulation and support sustainable infrastructure.

"On crime, among the initiatives we’ve flagged include: escalating penalties based on severity of offending and number of instances, measures to prevent offending before it occurs, development of fixed term sentences for youth boot camp/training centres, greater emphasis on parental/carer responsibility, increased foot patrols, enforce existing alcohol measures laws (eg 2km law) and more.

"The details of our policies and plans will be released closer to the election. We are still developing many as we gather more and more input from the community and stakeholders. As well, we will need to see the true state of the Territory’s books – something this government continues to hide.

"But Territorians can be assured, we will present them with a real choice, with a strong team of dedicated Territorians ready to work hard, and for, the community."
