Labor must explain why there is no cost benefit analysis supporting the expenditure for the Arafura Games.
The budget, having doubled from $4 million to now $8 million, is an excessive and unnecessary spend when Territorians are doing it tough, and Opposition Leader Gary Higgins is once again calling for an analysis on the cost.
"We hope the Games succeed but we’re worried it’s going to be another expensive failure which the NT just can’t afford," he said.
"It makes no sense to spend $8 million and then do a cost benefit analysis after the fact - show Territorians up front that this is an event worth spending their precious dollars on."
Mr Higgins said at its height in the 1990s, the Games attracted nearly 3000 participants. "That figure was progressively falling while the cost in 2011 was $3.5 million for just over 2000 participants," he said.
"Labor is again showing it is happy to spend taxpayers’ funds without considering the value of the expenditure.
"We do not have any confidence they know how to spend wisely."
